Boot Live ISO without CD,DVD or USB Flash Drive

Today I will show a quick way to use a live iso image without having to write it on a CD/DVD or using a flash drive. The process will work only with live iso images of Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

Ubuntu

Here are the steps.

Make a folder named iso in the root drive.

sudo mkdir /iso

Move the iso image to the folder named iso

sudo mv file-name.iso /iso

You now need to identify your computer’s hard disk.

 sudo fdisk -l

It would be like /dev/sda1 or something alike, do check the output in Terminal and be sure.

Now we need to edit the grub.cfg file

sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

 At the end of the file add these lines.

menuentry "Any Name You Want To See In The Grub Menu" {
set root=(hd0,1)
loopback loop /iso/file-name.iso
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/iso/file-name.iso noprompt noeject
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}
