You can't access Google Maps on Windows Phone.

If you have  Windows Phone 8 then you can not access Google Maps through the Internet Explorer browser. If you try to access the Google Maps page, you will be automatically redirected to Google home page.

We have seen earlier that Google does not play well with Microsoft OS, be it the new Windows 8 desktop OS or the Windows Phone OS. But unable to access the Google Maps web version is a completely different story. It seems to be the problem with rendering engine if the browser as the real reason.

Windows Phone devices

The Google Maps mobile web version was made with WebKit engine, which never supports in Internet Explorer. As I personally don”t have a Windows Phone 8 device, I tried visiting the Google Maps mobile web from a desktop browser by changing the user-agent and was redirected to Google homepage.

Statement issued by Google: “The mobile web version of Google Maps is optimized for WebKit browsers such as Chrome and Safari. However, since Internet Explorer is not a WebKit browser, Windows Phone devices are not able to access Google Maps online slots for the mobile web.”

Luckily the Windows Phone 8 has Bing Maps and Nokia Maps which the user can use as an alternative.

Update 1

Google is now restoring Google Maps access on Windows Mobile. Below is a statement from Google.

“We periodically test Google Maps compatibility with mobile browsers to make sure we deliver the best experience for those users.

In our last test, IE mobile still did not offer a good maps experience with no ability to pan or zoom and perform basic map functionality. As a result, we chose to continue to redirect IE mobile users to Google.com where they could at least make local searches. The Firefox mobile browser did offer a somewhat better user experience and that’s why there is no redirect for those users.

Recent improvements to IE mobile and Google Maps now deliver a better experience and we are currently working to remove the redirect. We will continue to test Google Maps compatibility with other mobile browsers to ensure the best possible experience for users.”

Story behind the missing YouTube app in Windows Phone.

Microsoft has been wanting to put the YouTube app on its Windows Phone for a long time but Google seems to be not at all interested. Earlier we have seen that Google said it won’t be making apps for the Windows 8 desktop OS. It now seems that Google is not intersted in both the desktop and mobile OS of Microsoft.

Even though the users of Windows Phone can access YouTube along with Google’s other products through the web, but a dedicated app is very much required when the rival mobile OS like Android and iOS has those apps. Also the users feels more comfortable using the apps rather then the web page of the services.

Windows Phone devices

Dave Heiner, Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Microsoft. said  “Microsoft has continued to engage with YouTube personnel over the past two years to remedy this problem for consumers” . Personally I think that Google is also loosing a lot of YouTube viewers because of the lack of app on Windows Phone platform. But it seems that Google thinks, not making the YouTube app on Windows Phone will make the hard core YouTube users to buy an Android device over Windows Phone.

Google Chrome comes to iOS

The popular browser on desktop on Windows, Mac and Linux, has made its way to iOS. And its supported on iPhone, iPad ad iPod Touch. After Safari Chrome is no doubt the best browser on iOS devices, although we had many other browsers for iOS but Chrome is undoubtedly the best one.

Some of the features of Chrome for iOS

Sync (yes you can sync it with the Chrome on your desktop)

Super Fast Page Load

You can send pages from your Chrome on computer to your iOS device and you can even read those pages when your are offline.

What I liked the best is the over all UI, opening multiple tabs (more than Safari) and managing them can be done very swiftly.

Are You Sure You want to use Google Drive? – Google Drive vs Dropbox vs SkyDrive vs iCloud.

Cloud has been the hottest topic recently. Like many cloud storage services Google launched its own cloud service named Google Drive. So lets have a look at what the different cloud services offer to their user.

Google Drive

Company: Google

Initial Free Storage Space: 10GB

Supported OS : Windows, Mac, Android.

Dropbox

Company: Dropbox

Initial Free Storage Space: 2GB

Supported OS : Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, BlackBerry

SkyDrive

Company: Microsoft

Initial Free Storage Space: 2GB (25GB free upgrade for old users)

Supported OS: Windows 7, Mac, Android, iOS.

iCloud

Company: Apple Inc.

Initial Free Storage Space: 5 GB

Supported OS: iOS, Windows 7,Mac.

Well  while selecting a service which will store your essential files you need to be careful. Generally people tend to select the cloud service that offers the largest storage, I personally look for maximum compatibility with different OS/devices. But in a cloud service the most important thing to look is the security and privacy. Well security wise I think Google will do a great job protecting my account from unauthorized action, but when it comes to privacy I have big problem whit Google Drives latest Privacy Policy, and I am sure a lot of people will have the same problem if they come to know it. But usually we just click “I accept”

Here is the terms and conditions, the Privacy Policy. (Please read at least the bold words)

Some of our Services allow you to submit content. You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours.

When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones.

So in a lay man’s term Google pretty much owns everything what you upload to the Google Drive, wish I could upload my worries.

Apple the most vulnerable software company of 2012

Apple software is generally considered to be more secure by many people, but the time has changed. After the recent Flashback Trojan , a new data has been out that shows Apple is one of the top ten software company in vulnerabilities of 2012 (the data is for first 3 months of the year)
  • Apple — 91 vulnerabilities
  • Oracle — 78 vulnerabilities
  • Google — 73 vulnerabilities
  • Microsoft — 43 vulnerabilities
  • IBM — 42 vulnerabilities
  • Cisco — 36 vulnerabilities
  • Mozilla — 30 vulnerabilities
  • MySQL — 28 vulnerabilities
  • Adobe — 27 vulnerabilities
  • Apache — 24 vulnerabilities
Data released by Trend Micro
However it is interesting to see that on the mobile OS Apple iOS is very much secure than its rival Google’s Android. May be its because of Apple’s closed App ecosystem. And the fact that more number of mobile internet traffic is from Android platform, which encourages the black hats to target the Android platform.
